Impact of Human-Artificial Intelligence Partnerships on Creativity
Final Report
With the advent of Personal Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools that are increasingly accessible to people beyond Data Scientists and Developers, there is a need to research on the impacts of humans and AI entering closer working relationships. Tools like ChatGPT are revolutionizing how people live and work on a daily basis. Their low barriers to entry mean that they can be adopted by practically anyone. However, little is known about the implications of humans and AI entering such intimate relationships. With these tools promising to generate creative ideas, understanding how the use of such tools can affect creativity – i.e., the generation of novel and useful ideas, is important. In this study, we find that a trade-off exists between improving the usefulness and improving the novelty of the ideas generated when using AI tools. To manage this trade-off, we suggest that humans should actively accumulate knowledge to reap more benefits from using AI. Furthermore, we find that accumulating knowledge within the AI’s scope would marginally add to usefulness at the cost of lower novelty. In contrast, accumulating knowledge outside the AI’s scope would add less to usefulness but sacrifice less novelty.
